History of Emerald Isle:
The Western most thirteen miles of the Bogue Banks barrier island of the Southern Outer Banks was purchased in 1951 from Mrs. Anita Fort Maulik of Philadelphia. The total purchase price of $350,000, the largest ever recorded in Carteret County at the time, was offered by seven investors from the Red Springs area of Southeastern North Carolina. This area was later named EMERALD ISLE.
Where did Emerald Isle get its name? Could it have been the developers were all Irishmen? Possibly, they were all jewelers? Maybe they were taunting jealous freinds who were green with envy? Some even mentioned that the water is more green than blue. Others said that phosphorus deposits left behind on the beach by the lapping waves created a green glow about dusk each day. These all sound like possiblities, but none are correct.
When the original developers were contemplating the purchase of the undeveloped half of the
island, a consultant from Florida was hired to advise them. This consultant asked to be flown over the property to gain a perspective on how development might occur. With no development at the time and appearing from the air as a solid green gem in the middle of a sea of sparkling water, he looked down from the heavens and said, "This Place Shall be Known as Emerald Isle".
Profiled in USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post as one of the East Coast's premier family vacation attractions, Emerald Isle officials have worked hard to maintain the island's popularity by enacting ordinances and restrictions designed to provide a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
The island hosts seasonal events each year, with the St. Patrick's Day Celebration kicking off the spring season each March. The two-day event features food from area restaurants, arts and crafts vendors, an 8K race and a series of concerts by local bands and musicians on three different stages.
According to a 1960 federal census, only 14 people lived on Emerald Isle, while today more than 3,700 residents call it home. During each summer, the town welcomes tens of thousands of visitors.
Emerald Isle attracts more than just vacationers, however. Investors also have shown great interest in the island, taking advantage of a low tax rate and rapidly rising property values. Emerald Isle has flourished because it has focused its attention on families, as well as on preserving its environment. The island, home to abundant wildlife, has established a program to protect its sea turtles

PROTECT THE TURTLES!
Starting in May, Female Loggerhead turtles will begin making their way onto our beaches to dig nests and lay eggs. This nesting activity continues until August. The female loggerhead comes ashore from Florida to North Carolina. She comes at night to lay her eggs in the sand. She will lay about 120 eggs and then cover the nest with sand and go back to the ocean. From then on the newly laid eggs are on their own to develop in the warm sand for about 60 days when they will hatch and make their way to the sea. Early morning volunteers are needed to walk a section of beach looking for and reporting turtle tracks and signs of nesting activities. These folks will also check daily to report any disturbances to the nest. In the late summer volunteers are needed to monitor the nests as they get ready to hatch. This is a big commitment but the rewards are awesome. It is a thrill to locate a nest and an even greater excitement when you see little hatchlings buyrst through and head for the sea. People will to volunteer for the Emerald Isle See Turtle Protection program should contact either Pam Minnick at 354 4288 or email her at paminn@aol.com or Jim Craig at 354-4001 or email him at JCraig2@ec.rr.com.
